Drought Affects 80 Percent of Slovakia

Drought of varying intensity is currently affecting around 80 percent of Slovakia, according to the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ). Severe to extreme drought conditions are being reported mainly in western and eastern parts of the country, with extreme drought covering about eight percent of the territory.

The most affected areas include the Little Carpathians, Záhorie, Považie, Orava and parts of the Zemplín region. Soil moisture levels remain critically low, especially around Bratislava and Záhorie. Meteorologists say roughly three-quarters of Slovakia has soil saturation below 50 percent. While some regions received significant rainfall last week, experts say moisture deficits persist across much of the country.
