Today marks World Environment Day, observed every year on June 5 since 1973 following a United Nations initiative. This year’s host country is Azerbaijan, focusing on climate action, green economic development, and international cooperation.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the past 11 years have been the warmest on record and called for faster cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, greater protection of forests and oceans, and a rapid transition to renewable energy.
According to the World Meteorological Organization, the years from 2015 to 2025 were the hottest ever recorded. Scientists report rising temperatures, warming oceans and increasing greenhouse gas concentrations among others. Europe remains the fastest-warming continent, with climate-related damage costing billions of euros annually.
