Row Over Slovak Air Defence Systems After Opposition Allegations

A political dispute has erupted in Slovakia over the handling of 2K12 KUB air defence systems. The non-parliamentary party Demokrati claim that military equipment ended up in the premises of a private company, Robus, and question whether it is being resold abroad, including to Uganda.

Former defence minister and party leader Jaroslav Naď (Demokrati) says he has evidence of a multi-stage transaction involving Slovak-origin systems, and is calling for the defence ministry to publish relevant contracts. The Democrats also argue that the equipment should remain part of Slovakia’s air defence capability.

Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák (SMER-SD) rejects the allegations, saying the systems were previously declared surplus based on earlier decisions of the previous government. He insists the armed forces still have the same number of operational KUB batteries as before, and describes the opposition claims as misleading.
