PM Calls for Clarifying Marriage Rules

Prime Minister Robert Fico has (Smer-SD) urged lawmakers to adopt legislation clarifying constitutional provisions on marriage. He said the measures should make clear that same-sex marriages concluded abroad cannot be registered in Slovakia.

Fico argued that the move is necessary to reflect the Slovak Constitution, which defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. He also referred to ongoing disagreements with the European Commission, claiming that Slovakia intends to defend its position on issues related to national identity and family law. According to the Prime Minister, lower-level legislation is needed to provide clear guidance for registry offices on when foreign marriages can or cannot be recognised under Slovak law.
