Jozef Božik, the chairman of the Association of Towns and Municipalities of Slovakia, says Slovak municipalities still face long-term financial challenges despite receiving additional state support in recent years. Speaking at the organization’s annual congress, he called for local governments to be excluded from debt-brake sanctions and for stronger involvement in decisions on reforms and European funding. President Peter Pellegrini said Slovakia needs a major reform of public administration focused on decentralization, digitalization and clearer competencies.
According to the Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD), municipalities would not face restrictions when approving their budgets, as the government does not plan to amend the constitutional law on budget responsibility.
