Slovak President Peter Pellegrini says the country’s top constitutional officials must maintain open dialogue during a period of political tension and international uncertainty. Speaking after Monday’s talks in Bratislava with Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) and Parliament Speaker Richard Raši (HLAS-SD), Pellegrini said regular coordination is essential on key domestic and foreign policy issues.
The leaders also discussed Slovakia’s upcoming presidency of the Visegrád Group from July first, highlighting the bloc’s combined 65 million people, 13 percent of the EU population and almost nine percent of the Union’s GDP. They said the V4 should continue pushing pragmatic regional positions in Brussels, including on the future EU budget and Ukraine’s reconstruction. The three leaders also agreed that Ukraine should not bypass Western Balkan countries already further along in the EU accession process.
