Top Constitutional Officials Discussing Environment Minister Dismissal

Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) has convened a meeting of the president, the parliamentary speaker and the prime minister as the country's top constitutional officials for Monday (25 May). The meeting followed the Coalition Council session and a separate meeting with junior coalition Slovak National Party (SNS) leader Andrej Danko and Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba (an SNS nominee).

After the session, SNS chair Andrej Danko insists to propose the environment minister's ouster. According to PM, the coalition talks provide an opportunity to discuss the steps regarding Danko's proposal.

Taraba said on Sunday that he doesn't intend to step down as minister and claimed there was an agreement between SNS and the opposition PS party to dismiss him in Parliament. In that case, he expects several MPs to react to the situation. PS deputy chair and MP Tamara Stohlova rejected the existence of such an agreement. SNS spokesperson Zuzana Skopcova stated on private TA3 TV channel on Sunday, that the Slovak National Party (SNS) has not held negotiations at any level with any opposition political party.
