Prime Minister Fico Backs Albania’s EU Ambitions

Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) met Albanian President Bajram Begaj in Bratislava on Wednesday to discuss bilateral relations, the Western Balkans and current European issues.

Fico said economic cooperation remains a priority, particularly in energy, infrastructure, tourism and digitalization. He also highlighted growing tourism ties between the two countries, supported by a direct flight connection between Bratislava and Tirana.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Slovakia’s support for Albania’s future membership in the European Union. He said EU enlargement remains important for the security and stability of Europe and emphasized that the Western Balkans are a priority of Slovak foreign policy.

Albania aims to conclude accession negotiations by 2027 and join the European Union by 2030.
