Foreign Minister Rejects European Parliament Criticism

Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) says a European Parliament resolution criticizing the state of democracy and rule of law in Slovakia does not reflect reality and has no legal effect on the country.

The Minister described the resolution as a political assessment and accused some Members of the European Parliament of turning European institutions into platforms for progressive-liberal activism.

Blanár said the Slovak government may hold different views on issues such as migration, media policy or the functioning of the EU, but argued this should not justify questioning Slovakia’s democratic standards.

He added that Slovakia respects all EU rules and remains engaged in constructive dialogue with the European Commission.

The European Parliament resolution, adopted in Strasbourg on Wednesday, expressed concern over what MEPs described as deteriorating democracy and rule of law in Slovakia.
