More than 8,400 Slovak citizens living abroad have registered to vote by post in July’s referendum. According to the Interior Ministry, the highest number of registrations came from the Czech Republic, followed by the UK and Germany. The referendum, set for July 4th, will ask voters whether to abolish lifetime pensions for top officials and whether to restore the Special Prosecutor’s Office and the National Crime Agency. A proposal to shorten the current parliamentary term was excluded after President Peter Pellegrini said it conflicted with Slovakia’s Constitution. Postal ballots must arrive at the Interior Ministry in Bratislava by noon on July 3rd to be counted. The referendum was triggered by a petition supported by more than 360,000 citizens and backed by the opposition Demokrati party.
