Two Years since PM Assassination Attempt

Two years have passed since the assassination attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer SD). On May 15, 2024, perpetrator Juraj Cintula fired multiple shots at the PM in Handlová, leaving him in critical condition. He was airlifted to hospital in Banská Bystrica and underwent emergency surgery.

The attacker was detained at the scene and later convicted of a terrorist attack. Slovakia’s Supreme Court confirmed the verdict this year, sentencing him to 21 years in a maximum-security prison.

Fico returned to public life weeks after the attack and said he held no hatred toward the shooter. The incident also deepened political tensions across the country.
