Ukraine–Slovakia Border Crossings Briefly Closed After Large-Scale Russian Drone Strikes

Border crossings between Slovakia and Ukraine were reopened on Wednesday afternoon after being temporarily closed for about two hours. The closures were announced by Slovakia’s Financial Administration and police, who said the decision was made by Ukraine amid reports of Russian airstrikes targeting western regions near the Slovak border. The Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic said their systems have been continuously monitoring Slovak airspace since the start of the war in Ukraine and that precautionary measures remain in place.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia launched more than 800 drones in a large-scale attack across Ukraine, focusing on areas close to NATO borders. The western Transcarpathian region, which borders Slovakia, experienced its most intense attack since the invasion began in February 2022, with reports of 11 drones entering its airspace. Most were reportedly intercepted or neutralized by Ukrainian air defense and electronic warfare systems, according to regional officials and military sources.

Police confirmed that the crossings were closed from around 3:00 p.m. and reopened at 4:47 p.m., adding that the situation is being closely monitored. A spokesperson for the Slovak Armed Forces said Slovakia is integrated into NATO’s airspace information-sharing system and that any additional measures depend on classified plans and the current security status.

The Financial Administration urged the public to follow official updates and respect instructions from border and police authorities. It also warned that the situation remains fluid as authorities continue to assess developments. Reports from Ukrainian regions, including Lviv, Volyn, Ivano-Frankivsk, Rivne, and others, indicated strikes across multiple locations, with at least six fatalities and dozens of injuries, including children.
