Schools in Slovakia to Receive Ethical Code for Using AI

Schools will receive an ethical code for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in electronic form. The document is designed as a practical manual aimed at defining the boundaries of acceptable AI use and providing legal and methodological certainty for teachers, students, and parents. It was prepared by the Asociácia AI in cooperation with the nonprofit Edulab and the Združenie základných škôl Slovenska. Representatives of these organizations presented it on Wednesday.

The basic principle of the code is that AI is a supportive tool that must not take over the role of authority in assessment, education, or decision-making about a student. “AI should always be a tool that we as humans control, over which we as humans have authority, and for which we as humans are responsible for the outcomes,” said Miroslava Šáchová from Asociácia AI. According to Damián Palašta, this is the most important point from a legal perspective.

The code also addresses recommendations related to sourcing and prompting. If a student uses AI when completing an assignment, they should state at minimum the name of the tool used, the purpose of its use, and the prompt or its essential part in a scope appropriate to the nature of the task and the teacher’s requirements. The document also prohibits misuse of AI, cyberbullying, or the creation of deepfake content. Such behavior is recommended to be treated as a serious violation of school rules.

Ján Machaj, director of Edulab, noted that AI can take on several roles in the teaching profession. It can serve as an assistant that relieves a large amount of work, a creative opponent, and a mentor that can help analyze teaching. The president of the Združenie základných škôl Slovenska, Eva Horníková, considers it important that the document clearly defines, for the first time, not only the responsibility of teachers but also of students—who must cite sources—as well as parents.

The code will become part of the recommendations of the Ministry of Education. This was confirmed by the minister’s advisor Radoslav Baťo Varga, who also mentioned steps the ministry is taking in response to the rise of AI, including AI literacy in the national education program and gradual changes to the professional standards of teaching and specialist staff.
