The number of people staying in tourist accommodation facilities in Slovakia rose by 6.5 percent year-on-year (y-o-y) to 432,000 in March 2026, the Statistics Office reported on Tuesday.
Accommodation providers fell by only 0.4 percent (by less 2,000 guests) short of the most successful March in terms of tourism to date, March 2019.
Almost two thirds of the accommodated tourists were domestic visitors, whose number reached 266,000 in March, up 1 percent y-o-y. However, the figure failed to surpass the record set in March 2019, standing 5 percent below it.
The number of foreign clients reached almost 167,000, an increase of 16 percent y-o-y. This was the highest-ever number for March, exceeding the record set in March 2019 by 7 percent.
Guests from the Czech Republic were by far the most conspicuous among the foreign visitors, making up 30.4 percent of them (almost 51,000 tourists), followed by visitors from Poland with a 14.1 percent-share (more than 23,000 tourists).
Visitors spent 1.1 million nights in Slovakia, up 4.5 percent y-o-y. The number of nights spent fell short of the record set in 2019 by 9.1 percent. Visitors spent 2.5 nights in Slovakia on average in March.
The most-frequently visited region was Bratislava region, posting 116,000 guests in March. It was followed by regions focused on winter tourism and skiing: Žilina region (101,000 visitors) and Prešov region (69,000). These three regions together accounted for two thirds of the total visitor numbers in Slovakia in March. Bratislava region was the only one where the majority of those accommodated were foreign tourists.
In the first three months of 2026, almost 1.4 million tourists were accommodated in tourism facilities in Slovakia, up by 9.2 percent. The quarterly visitor number was 0.1 percent higher than the one seen in the same period before the pandemic (in 2019).
