New Head Coach of the Slovak National Football Team Named

Vladimír Weiss Sr. has become the new head coach of the Slovak national football team. The 61-year-old coach returns to the national team after 14 years, with his appointment approved on Tuesday by the Executive Committee of the Slovak Football Association (SFZ).

The SFZ had been searching for a new coach since the end of April, when members of the expert commission failed to agree on continuing cooperation with 57-year-old Italian coach Francesco Calzona, who had led Slovakia since August 2022. His contract with the SFZ expired on March 31.

Weiss Sr. previously led the national team from 2008-2012 during which time he took Slovakia to its first World Cup as an independent nation.

Weiss Sr. is one of a small number of people to have appeared as a player and a coach at a FIFA World Cup.
