Slovak President Peter Pellegrini says he believes Slovakia and Hungary will maintain good relations under Hungary’s new Prime Minister, Péter Magyar. Speaking on Monday, Pellegrini said he hopes disputes linked to the Beneš decrees* can be resolved through pragmatic and technical discussions.
He added that Slovakia would work to prevent tensions and preserve friendly cooperation between the two neighbours. Pellegrini also welcomed Magyar’s support for stronger regional cooperation within the Visegrad Four group. Magyar was elected Prime Minister by Hungary’s parliament on Saturday after his Tisza party secured a constitutional majority in April’s elections.
*The Beneš decrees were a series of post-World War 2 measures issued by Czechoslovak President Edvard Beneš. Some stripped ethnic Germans and Hungarians of citizenship and property, laying the groundwork for expulsions and population exchanges after the war. The issue remains sensitive in Slovak-Hungarian relations to this day.
