Slovakia and Czechia Return to Venice Biennale with Joint Contemporary Art Project

After a 20-year hiatus, Slovakia and the Czech Republic are presenting a joint exhibition project titled “The Silence of the Mole” at the prestigious Venice Biennale, an international art exhibition. The project was created to mark the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Czechoslovak Pavilion in Venice. The exhibition is organized by the National Gallery in Prague (NGP) in collaboration with the Slovak National Gallery (SNG).

The creators are Czech artist Jakub Jansa and the Slovak artist duo Selmeci Kocka Jusko, with Peter Sit serving as curator. The winning proposal was selected by an international jury in an open competition. At the center of the project is “Mr. M.,” who spent his entire life portraying the fictional character of a mole. According to the artists, the motif of his burrow and character is also a metaphor for how both countries perceive themselves.

Peter Sit noted that the mole motif represents a kind of childlike fantasy that has been exploited by soft power. The project consists of architecture, film, and objects. The Biennale runs through November 22.
