Foreign and European Affairs Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) has called for the announced ceasefires by Ukraine and Russia to be used as an opportunity to de-escalate tensions.
"A cessation of hostilities means an end to senseless killing and destruction on both sides. The announced ceasefires create space for continuing peace negotiations, and there's a need to use them for that purpose. I therefore welcome the initiatives from both sides, which I believe will be mutually respected," stated the Minister.
In this context, he also emphasised that the Slovak government continues to consistently advocate for diplomatic dialogue, peaceful solutions and respect for international law. "We support all steps that would lead to a de-escalation in tensions and create space for negotiations for a lasting peace," stated the head of Slovak diplomacy.
By decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin, a unilateral Russian ceasefire in the fighting against Ukraine was announced for the 8th and 9th May 2026, on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory in World War II. In response to this proposal, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared a ceasefire with Russia, which will take effect at midnight on 5–6 May 2026.
