Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) says Canada is moving closer to Europe, after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney attended the European Political Community summit in Yerevan. Fico described it as a sign of growing ties between Canada and the European Union, at a time when the United States is, in his words, stepping back from Europe.
He said Europe is placing growing emphasis on strategic independence — particularly in energy, security and competitiveness — but stressed this should not come at the expense of ties with Washington. The summit also underlined the importance of diversifying energy supplies, including potential sources in the South Caucasus region.
Fico added the gathering provided an opportunity for direct talks with several leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset.
