Fuel prices in Slovakia remain higher than in most neighbouring countries. Last week, diesel averaged 1 euro 78 cents per litre, while gasoline stood at 1 euro 68.
Drivers in the Czech Republic pay about seven cents less for diesel and in Poland up to 16 cents less. Austria is the only neighbour with higher prices.
The opposition is urging Prime Minister Robert Fico to act, after earlier promises that Slovak fuel would stay competitive.
Analysts say prices are unlikely to drop soon, as oil and wholesale fuel costs continue to rise. The Slovnaft refinery blames higher taxes, while experts point to tensions in the Middle East as a key factor pushing prices up.
