“The Chernobyl tragedy is a lasting reminder that the pursuit of technological progress must be measured and responsible, with the protection of human life coming first.”
This was stated by Speaker of Parliament Richard Raši (Hlas-SD) on social media to mark Sunday’s 40th anniversary of the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
The disaster, one of the worst in the history of nuclear energy, occurred shortly after midnight on April 26, 1986. Radioactive fallout heavily affected parts of Ukraine and Belarus, while contaminated air also spread across much of Europe, including Slovakia. Authorities in the Soviet Union and former Czechoslovakia initially sought to conceal the scale of the accident and later downplayed its consequences.
