Agriculture Minister Richard Takáč (Smer-SD) said the state will provide financial support worth several million euros to help the dairy sector cope with falling prices and oversupply. However, he stressed that stronger solutions must come from the European Commission, as the crisis affects multiple EU countries.
Takáč is advocating EU-level measures such as buying excess milk and processing it into powdered milk for export. Industry representatives warn that continued price drops could lead to the collapse of dairy farming in Slovakia. The Slovak Agricultural and Food Chamber is calling for urgent talks between government, producers and retailers to stabilise the sector.
