Slovakia and Czechia Move Closer on High-Speed Rail Link

Slovakia and the Czechia have taken a step closer to building a high-speed rail line connecting Prague, Brno and Bratislava - a project that could cut travel time between the two capitals to under two hours. At present, the journey takes around four and a half hours.

Transport Ministers Jozef Ráž (Smer-SD nominee) and Ivan Bednárik signed a memorandum in Prague aimed at boosting the project’s chances of securing EU funding.

Ráž says the agreement strengthens Slovakia’s position in applying for grants from the Connecting Europe Facility and increases the likelihood of success with joint projects.

The Czech side plans to begin construction of part of the line from Brno southwards in 2030, with trains expected to reach speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour.

According to Bednárik, the full connection - including Slovakia - could be completed around 2040.
