Foreign Affairs Committee Didn't Debate Alleged Hungary–Russia Collaboration

The House committee on foreign affairs did not discuss the alleged collaboration between Hungary's outgoing government and Russia, which reportedly involved Slovak representatives, as the committee session convened by the opposition failed to take place on Tuesday due to being inquorate.

Opposition representatives described Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto's actions as collaboration, and they pointed to the possible involvement of Slovak government representatives.

"Outgoing Foreign Minister Szijjarto promised to remove Russian oligarchs, or the sister of a Russian oligarch, from the European sanctions list, which did happen. He also promised Slovak assistance in this matter. We wanted to ask [Foreign Affairs] Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD): did he really provide help? And if so, whose side is he playing for?" asked Progressive Slovakia (PS) MP and House foreign affairs committee vice-chair Tomáš Valášek.

At a press conference earlier on Tuesday, House vice-chair Tibor Gašpar (Smer-SD) described phone calls between Szijjarto and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as standard diplomatic relations.

In his telephone call with Lavrov, Szijjarto reportedly said that "along with the Slovaks" he was submitting a proposal to remove Gulbachor Ismailova, sister of Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, from the EU sanctions list. The EU ultimately removed Ismailova along with two other Russian representatives from the list in March 2025.
