Biomethane in Ožďany to Help Decrease Dependency on Natural Gas Imports

A biomethane production plant has opened in Ožďany near Rimavská Sobota, south eastern Slovakia. Biomethane significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and energy dependence. “We process waste that would otherwise end up in landfills,” explained Marek Paál of SPP – Distribution, a member of the largest energy supplier in Slovakia.

At optimal capacity, the new plant is expected to produce nearly four million cubic meters of biomethane per year. According to Paál, this amount equals the annual consumption of approximately 2,500 households.

In addition to heating, biomethane is also used in bus transportation as an eco-friendly fuel component. Biogas has the potential to cover about ten percent of natural gas consumption in Slovakia. “If we were to realize this potential, we would significantly improve energy security and reduce our dependence on natural gas imports,” said Richard Kvasňovský of the Slovak Gas and Oil Association.
