Slovakia will require citizens to include their date of birth when signing referendum petitions under a newly approved law. The change, passed by the Slovak Parliament, aims to prevent misuse of petition rights and improve verification of signatures.
Previously, only name, surname and address were required. MPs initially considered including personal ID numbers but opted for birth dates as a less sensitive alternative.
The opposition criticised the move, warning it could discourage people from signing petitions and raise concerns over data protection. Coalition MPs, however, argue the measure strikes a balance between verification and privacy. The new rules are set to take effect on June 1.
