Ombudsman Proposes Changes to Ensure Fair Elections

Slovakia’s Ombudsman Róbert Dobrovodský has proposed legislative changes to strengthen equality in local and regional elections. The aim is to ensure that each vote carries the same weight and to prevent distortions in electoral competition.

The proposals include clearer rules for defining electoral districts so that each elected representative corresponds to a similar number of residents. The Ombudsman also suggests that municipalities should set and publish electoral districts at least one year before elections to allow proper oversight.

Further changes target faster decision-making, including shorter deadlines for authorities and courts to handle disputes. The proposals follow a review that found widespread inequalities, with some votes carrying significantly more weight than others.
