Hungary’s Prime Minister-Designate Péter Magyar said Hungary’s new government will seek to restore the rule of law, strengthen pluralist democracy, and reinforce the system of checks and balances. He has also pledged to strengthen relations with Slovakia following his election victory, while also calling for solutions to longstanding disputes.
Speaking in Budapest on Monday, he stressed the importance of close cooperation with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) and within the Visegrad Group. Magyar said improving ties is essential, particularly for Hungary’s minority in Slovakia, but added that issues such as the Beneš Decrees should be addressed. He expressed confidence that an agreement with Bratislava can be reached. Fico, meanwhile, congratulated Magyar on his victory and said he is ready for intensive cooperation, voicing support for friendly relations with Budapest.
