Slovak Leaders Debate Expanding Army Powers

Slovak leaders agreed to further analyse whether to introduce a “state of threat” that would expand army powers, following a roundtable led by President Peter Pellegrini. Instead of immediate changes, officials will hold joint exercises to assess what legal adjustments are needed. Army chief Daniel Zmeko said the priority is ensuring forces can act effectively, regardless of the legal form. Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák (Smer-SD) argued current powers are insufficient. “The point is that the armed forces can be effective, especially when we are already trying to deploy a larger number of new air defense systems,” said the Defence Minister.

The opposition MPs on the other hand, warned against potential misuse. Despite differences, both coalition and opposition agreed that defence legislation needs updating.
