Businesses Can Voluntarily Join e-Invoicing System as of May

The e-invoicing project has entered a key phase, as many businesses, companies and sole traders will have to comply with a new way of issuing and sending invoices as of next year, Financial Administration (the tax and customs office) spokesperson Daniel Kováč announced on Tuesday, adding that businesses can start joining the system on a voluntary basis in May of this year.

According to Kováč, the launch of e-invoicing is part of the European VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA) project aimed at modernising the value-added tax system and unifying the rules within the European Union (EU). It will apply to all taxable entities established in Slovakia.

"The obligation to issue electronic invoices applies to VAT payers, i.e. not only large companies but also sole traders, such as craftsmen, construction contractors, accountants or IT providers, if they issue invoices to another entrepreneur or company," stressed Kováč, adding that e-invoicing won't apply to situations in which goods or services are supplied to end customers who are natural persons, or in other specific cases. In addition, every business entity will be obliged to accept e-invoices.

Businesses are advised to prepare for the launch of the e-invoicing system in advance and first of all check with their accountant or software supplier whether their solution supports e-invoicing and communication with the delivery service provider's system, said Financial Administration's IT section general director Stanislav Pavlovič.

He added that invoices will be exchanged by means of certified delivery service providers that may be chosen by business entities based on their needs. A list of certified providers has already been published on Financial Administration's website.

"Smaller business will be able to use basic packages for a smaller number of documents, while for larger volumes, the unit price will be lower. Abroad, costs typically range from €0.05 to 0.50 per invoice depending on the total number, while there are also solutions for processing a smaller number of invoices free of charge," said Kováč.
