Mixed Reviews Mark Two Years of President Pellegrini

On Monday, two years after his election, Slovakia’s President Peter Pellegrini received mixed reviews from across the political spectrum. Coalition figures largely praise his performance, saying he has carried out his mandate with dignity and can both criticise and defend the government’s core values. However, nationalist allies are more critical, saying he should be more active and more visibly support the coalition.

Opposition parties, on the other hand, argue that the President has not fulfilled his promise to be a non-partisan head of state, saying he challenges the government only when it is politically safe and is not active enough on key domestic and foreign policy issues.

Before the 2024 presidential run-off, Pellegrini was backed by all coalition parties. With three years left in office, his future remains uncertain after Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) signalled his party may not support him again, citing President’s veto of a whistleblower protection law.
