Slovakia and Hungary Call for EU Shift on Russian Energy

Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) and Hungary’s Viktor Orbán are urging the European Union to resume talks with Russia and scrap sanctions on oil and gas imports. Following a weekend phone call, the two leaders warned that Europe faces a growing energy crunch and cannot tackle it at national level alone. Fico said the European Commission should create conditions to secure supplies from all available sources, including Russia, and help replenish shrinking reserves. He also called for a new EU initiative to speed up an end to the war in Ukraine.

Orbán echoed the message, saying sanctions should be suspended immediately and warning of rising prices and shortages. He also urged the EU to push Volodymyr Zelenskyy to reopen the Druzhba pipeline, stressing that “every day counts” in avoiding a deeper crisis.
