Slovakia is emerging as a key player within NATO in bomb disposal. During a visit to the NATO Explosive Ordnance Disposal Centre of Excellence in Trenčín on Monday, President Peter Pellegrini said the country now leads the alliance in removing explosive devices and training specialists from partner nations. He highlighted the centre’s top-level NATO certification and its growing use of technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality.
Pellegrini also said Slovakia is close to taking full control of its own airspace protection. With most of the new F-16 fighter jets already delivered, he expects the transition by the end of this year or early next year. The move would end reliance on neighbouring allies. He added that new Israeli air defence systems are due to arrive soon, boosting protection amid rising drone incursions and broader regional security concerns.
