Slovakia has recorded its fifth straight year of population decline, with numbers falling by more than 10,000 in 2025 to just over 5.4 million. New data from the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic show the drop is mainly driven by a sharp fall in births, now at a historic low. Around 42,000 children were born last year, while more than 53,000 people died, continuing a trend of natural population loss. Experts say that while earlier declines were linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, the current drop is mainly due to very low fertility rates.
Although more people are still moving to Slovakia than leaving, migration is no longer enough to offset the losses. Despite the recent trend, the country’s population remains slightly higher overall than when it became independent in 1993.
