Speaking on public broadcaster STVR’s political programme Sobotné dialógy (Saturday Dialogues), President Peter Pellegrini said that the Slovak Constitution should allow for the possibility of shortening Parliament’s electoral term through a referendum.
He also briefly addressed the geopolitical situation and Euro-Atlantic relations, noting that the current climate is marked by an “erosion of relations” between the U.S. and Europe, particularly in light of developments surrounding the conflicts in Iran and Ukraine. “The response to this must be a more self-assured stance on the part of Europe,” Pellegrini emphasized, adding that this includes striving for the swiftest possible diplomatic resolution to the war in Europe.
Pellegrini also expressed confidence that the upcoming elections in Hungary will not undermine Slovak-Hungarian relations built over the years. “I would very much regret it if, in the event of a change of government in Hungary, the new leadership were to adopt the same stance toward Slovakia as the previous Czech government, which dramatically curtailed contacts and joint negotiations,” he stated.
The president stressed that, especially in the current tense geopolitical climate, maintaining good neighbourly relations remains essential.
