Slovakia could be interested in purchasing Romania’s natural gas and transporting it via existing infrastructure on a commercial basis, Slovak Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) said following talks with his Romanian counterpart Ilie Bolojan in Bucharest on Friday. Fico linked the potential deal to European efforts to reduce dependence on Russian energy sources.
Bolojan emphasized the strong relations between the two countries and their mutual trade. He highlighted ongoing efforts to improve energy and road connectivity through the Via Carpatia project. “This is a strategic corridor connecting northern and southern Europe, and it is essential to accelerate its completion,” said the Romanian Prime Minister.
On defense, Bolojan noted efforts to strengthen NATO’s presence on the eastern flank and in the Black Sea region, citing Romania’s participation in the NATO multinational battlegroup in Slovakia. Both leaders also reported cooperation in culture and defense, with Fico praising the special anti-tank unit deployed by Romania.
The state visit included a meeting with ethnic Slovaks living near the city of Oradea. Fico highlighted that the Slovak minority in the region is loyal to Romania and announced that the Slovak government will adopt a resolution to support preschool education for children in the city.
