The European Parliament’s Committee on Budgetary Control is dissatisfied with developments in Slovakia. A majority of its members voted in favour of the European Commission initiating proceedings against Slovakia regarding the protection of the EU budget. The opposition calls this a serious warning that could lead to the withdrawal of EU funds, while the coalition claims it is merely a fabricated scandal.
The committee approved a resolution by a majority vote, citing alarming mismanagement of EU funds in Slovakia and the dismantling of structures designed to safeguard European funds. According to media reports, committee members are concerned, for example, about the dissolution of the National Criminal Agency and the Special Prosecutor’s Office. KDH MEP Miriam Lexmann points out that some of the committee’s concerns have already led to the suspension of payments. „600 million euros. The European Public Prosecutor’s Office has released a report detailing corruption schemes involving Slovakia, millions of euros in EU funds, and uninvestigated corruption schemes,“ Lexmann said.
MEPs who voted in favor of the resolution speak of a massive attack on the rule of law in Slovakia. The European Parliament will vote on it in April.
