On the 25th of March 1988 the Sviečková manifestácia, Candle Demonstration, took place in Hviezdoslav Square in Bratislava. This was the most significant manifestation of civil resistance in the former Czechoslovakia since 1969. It marked the beginning of the end of the Communist Regime that had held power since the 1940’s.
To commemorate the first mass protest against the repressive regime in Czechoslovakia since 1969, Slovaks observe March 25 as the Struggle for Human Rights Day.
This rally was a precursor of the Velvet Revolution, which would take place in November of 1989. The rally was organized by the Secret Church who demanded not just freedom of religion, but also dignity, freedom of speech and the recognition of civil and human rights.
The significance of the Candle Demonstration is still relevant today. Slovaks know the value of civic bravery and support its expression in other countries as well.
