PM Raises Rule of Law Concerns in Talks with EU Commissioner

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) told European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection Michael McGrath that Slovakia must respond to what he described as past violations of the rule of law. After their meeting in Bratislava on Monday, Fico said the country is still dealing with the legacy of 2020 to 2023. He argued legislative steps may be needed, and called for constructive dialogue with the European Commission, reaffirming Slovakia’s place in the European Union.

McGrath said discussions also covered ongoing infringement proceedings and recent changes to whistleblower protection laws, noting the government’s move to reverse amendments. Both sides agreed on the need for open dialogue as the Commission prepares its next rule of law report.
