President Signs Law Protecting Whistleblower Office

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini has signed an amendment to the Criminal Code that restores the Whistleblower Protection Office, reversing plans to replace it with a new institution. The presidential office said the move confirms the president’s earlier veto was justified. Lawmakers had previously approved legislation to abolish the office, but the plan was halted amid legal challenges and concerns it could affect funding from the EU recovery plan.

The amendment also introduces a new criminal offence covering the desecration of war graves, military burial sites and Holocaust memorials. Offenders could face up to one year in prison, or up to two years in more serious cases. The new law is set to take effect on April first.
