Next Austerity Package to Target Efficiency, Not Workers

Slovakia’s next potential austerity package is not expected to introduce new measures affecting people or businesses, the government told social partners at Monday’s Economic and Social Council meeting. Labour Minister Erik Tomáš (HLAS-SD) said any further measures would focus on cutting state spending and boosting efficiency. He highlighted savings from tackling fraudulent sick leave, noting the state could save around 140 million euros again this year.

Trade unions welcomed the absence of direct impacts but warned that spending cuts could still affect vulnerable groups. Employers, meanwhile, raised concerns over confusion around holiday pay rules, which they say could increase costs.
