Prime Minister Robert Fico has warned that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO, could collapse at any time, potentially triggered by a withdrawal of the United States. Speaking on public broadcaster STVR’s Saturday political programme, he also said that the global order is disintegrating and that institutions such as the United Nations and the European Union have little influence over events.
"In this climate of a collapsing world order, the European Union must focus on its own economic strength and we must forget those senseless green policies that are degrading our industry and economy," Fico declared.
The opposition party Progressive Slovakia says the prime minister failed to secure any concessions for Slovakia at the recent European Union leaders’ summit. According to the party, Slovakia’s growing isolation is the result of the current coalition’s foreign policy.
The Christian Democrats, or KDH, also criticized the government, saying that in the key area of energy security, Fico did not succeed in pushing for the resumption of oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline in the European Council’s conclusions.
In the same Saturday debate programme, Fico also said that his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán is politically right to block a multi-billion loan for Ukraine, describing him as a seasoned politician. At the same time, he stressed that he does not attend events in Hungary or directly support candidates in the country’s parliamentary elections, while warning of a possible end to good bilateral relations if there is a change of government.
