New Law Proposal Targets Support for Single Parents

A new proposal in Slovakia aims to introduce a legal definition of “single parent” and strengthen support for single-parent households. The amendment, put forward by MP Paula Puškárová, is expected to be submitted to parliament soon, with discussion planned for April.

The proposal includes raising minimum child support from 30 percent to 100 percent of a child’s subsistence minimum, significantly increasing financial support for children. It also introduces clearer rules for cases where a parent does not disclose income and sets a 180-day deadline for court decisions on appeals. The Labour Ministry confirmed ongoing discussions, warning that higher payments could lead to more non-paying parents. However, NGOs and experts have welcomed the changes, saying they could ease financial pressure on single-parent families.

Opposition MPs also expressed cautious support but suggested shorter deadlines and additional measures, such as broader state assistance, to make the system more effective.
