A bust of General Milan Rastislav Štefánik was unveiled at the Verano military cemetery in Rome, highlighting his importance as a major European figure. Slovak Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová described him as a scientist, diplomat, soldier and statesman who played a key role in the creation of Czechoslovakia. She recalled that it was largely thanks to Štefánik that Italy became the first country to recognize the Czechoslovak legions, effectively supporting the future independent state. The ceremony symbolized strong historical ties between Slovakia and Italy, rooted in his legacy.
Italian representatives also praised Štefánik as a visionary who connected the two nations and contributed to their shared history during World War I. The unveiling took place during the minister’s visit to Italy, which also includes talks on strengthening cultural cooperation and a commemorative event dedicated to Štefánik and the Czechoslovak legions.
