Slovakia Tightens Diesel Rules to Curb Shortages

Slovakia is introducing strict temporary controls on diesel from Thursday, aiming to stabilise supply after shortages at some northern filling stations. The government has approved a 30-day limit on how much diesel motorists can buy, along with restrictions on exports. Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) says the move follows a surge in so-called “fuel tourism,” with foreign drivers—especially from neighbouring countries—crossing the border to take advantage of lower prices.

Under the new rules, vehicles registered outside Slovakia will pay a higher, special diesel price based on average rates in Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland. Petrol stations will be required to clearly display both domestic and foreign pricing. Authorities say emergency services will be exempt, and further exceptions may be granted. Opposition parties have criticised the measures as chaotic and impractical, warning they fail to address underlying energy challenges.
