On Friday Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok (Hlas-SD) said that Slovakia is ready to face a possible migration crisis with respect to developments in the Middle East.
Šutaj Eštok underlined that authorities will do everything to protect the people of Slovakia.
"Of course, Slovakia is ready to face the approaching possible migration crisis, which is highly probable considering the developments taking place in the Middle East. But we will do everything to protect the citizens of the Slovak Republic," Šutaj Eštok said.
The Minister noted that measures were adopted on the very day the military conflict broke out. Protection has also been bolstered, particularly at embassies considered to be at risk. The number of police patrols has also been increased at locations with a higher concentration of people.
At the same time, he pointed out that there are currently no people in Slovakia who would pose a security risk. According to him, Slovakia does not need to be concerned in the same way as, for example, France, Germany or Brussels.
Prime Minister Fico has asked the Interior Minister and other respective members of the government to mobilise all "proven methods" of preventing illegal migration and to carry out the necessary exercises at designated border sections.
"The military adventures of Western countries in Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan, motivated by oil or other reasons, have left behind only disrupted state structures, chaos, and hopelessness for the inhabitants. And these are among the main factors of illegal migration," said the Prime Minister.
According to him, everyone should care about ensuring that Iran's retaliatory actions against neighbouring countries don't lead to an escalation of the regional conflict into a global one. "In any case, we must once again be properly prepared for possible waves of illegal migrants," he pointed out.
The Prime Minister noted that the government's main task in the coming months is to prevent Slovakia from being drawn into any "military adventures" and to do everything necessary to protect against illegal migration and fight for Slovakia's national interests in the supply of raw materials such as gas and oil.
