Housing construction in Slovakia significantly decelerated last year, with only 14,300 flats being completed during 2025, a drop of 19 percent year-on-year (y-o-y), the Statistics Office reported earlier this week based on preliminary housing construction data.
The number of completed apartments was almost one quarter lower than the average for the past ten years. At the same time, the slowdown in the start of construction of new flats continued in 2025.
The construction of 15,100 new flats was launched in 2025. Although the figure decreased only slightly from the year before, it was 26 percent lower than the ten-year average.
At the end of last December, 77,700 flats were under construction in Slovakia, which was an increase of 0.8 percent y-o-y and 2 percent above the ten-year average.
In the final quarter of last year, 3,235 flats were completed, a drop of more than one third y-o-y. Their number fell when compared to the long-term average for the same period as well. Flats were the most commonly completed form of housing, making up 68 percent of the total.
Meanwhile, construction of almost 3,600 housing units was launched in the fourth quarter of 2025. The figure was almost unchanged from the year before and 37 percent lower than the long-term average for final quarters. Family houses made up only 35 percent of the total number of housing units launched.
