Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) currently sees no reason to convene the Security Council of the Slovak Republic regarding the situation in the Middle East, arguing that the information available is up to date and sufficient. This follows his statement at a Monday press conference.
“Since we have very current information and know what is happening, I see no reason to convene the security council just to satisfy some opposition MPs. (…) If necessary, I can convene the security council in three minutes. I sometimes consider it better to do less and do it well than to create unnecessary media activity,” Fico said.
He also questioned what the security council would change regarding the situation in Iran and the surrounding region. “I believe that at this moment it is sufficient that every morning we receive relevant information from Tehran from our ambassador. However, this will change soon because, for security reasons, this ambassador will have to leave Iran and move to Azerbaijan. It remains true that all other diplomats in the crisis region — whether in Tel Aviv, the United Arab Emirates, or Lebanon — stay at their posts,” he added.
The prime minister reiterated that the government is prepared to convene the security council if the security situation in Slovakia worsens. “Right now, we have to deal with oil,” he noted.
