The possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz, combined with a disruption of oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline, would directly threaten Slovakia’s energy security. The Deputy Foreign Minister Marek Eštok said this after an extraordinary meeting of EU foreign ministers on the situation in Iran and the Middle East.
“Slovakia condemns the attack on Iran as a violation of international law,” he said. At the same time Eštok stressed that peace and stability in the region are crucial and said Slovakia supports countries in the Persian Gulf attacked by Iran and supports strengthening the EU’s engagement with them. Solidarity, he added, is essential for the safe return of Slovak citizens.
In response to the crisis in the Middle East, oil prices on world markets increased by more than 8% today. Further developments will depend on the direction the conflict takes. However, the situation in Slovakia is also complicated by problems with the supply of our refinery, which may create additional pressure on prices.
