In Slovakia, nearly one million people live at the poverty line, representing more than 18 percent of the population. This is according to a major European survey conducted in 2024. Slovakia ranks 16th among the countries of the European Union. Compared to the Czech Republic, this is a difference of seven percentage points.
According to European criteria, a person is considered poor if they cannot afford at least seven out of 13 basic needs. For example, they may have arrears on rent or energy payments, be unable to cover an unexpected expense of €441, or be unable to afford a car.
Sociologist Zuzana Kusá says that the groups most at risk of poverty include the unemployed, single parents, and households with several children.
